Jr. Senator from Minnesota

Jr. Senator from Minnesota

Al Franken was declared the winner of the contested Minnesota U.S. Senate seat on Tuesday, June 30, 2009 by the Minnesota State Supreme Court.  Although behind on the first count of the November election returns, selective counting, ballots found hidden in a car trunk and other anomalies gave Franken a razor thin lead of 225 votes.

Ending one of the longest Senate races ever, the Minnesota Supreme Court unanimously rejected each of Republican Norm Coleman’s  five legal arguments that an earlier recount of the November 4 vote had been unfair. (yahoo news)

The “Troubled Asset Relief Program” (TARP) program was created as a means to limit the effects of the recession on the credit markets.  However, the Obama administration has now found a new use for it.  The executive branch has found it to be useful as a tool to apply pressure on the banks.

If the banks are forced to keep TARP cash — which was often forced on them in the first place — the Obama team can work its will on the financial system to unprecedented degree. That’s what’s happening right now.  (the Wall Street Journal)

Conservative #1: wonders why the government would fire the CEO of GM but none of the Bank CEOs that got far more money.

I also wonder how it is that Congress and the Senate can approve pay raises for themselves and still limit how the private sector handles their employees…hmmm. Hypocrisy, and a complete double standard…don’t do as I do, rather do as I tell you.

Most of the banks didn’t want the money. It was forced upon them by the Treasury. Paulson looked at the TARP and realized that buying the bad debt would burn through the money too quickly. He realized it would be better to recapitalize the balance sheets to offset the mark to market losses that were on the books of the banks. Also, most of the CEOs weren’t in place when the decisions to buy the toxic assets started. That being said I don’t think gov’t should get involved with the running of private sector companies since they do such a crap job running what they’ve already got.

Conservative #3: Court cases like this should be deemed Unconstitutional! When the voice of the people is overruled by the courts and/or government then it is no longer a democracy. Who is defending the constitution anymore?  Certainly not the courts.

BTW tell Liberal #3’s wife that I say hi. I don’t know that she will remember me, but tell her anyway.
Thanks

The big deal is that the tax payers saved the company’s butt by giving them a lot of money so they would not go bankrupt, then they give out $165 million dollars worth of bonuses to upper management who already make too much money while the rest of the people in this country are losing their jobs and homes. Who is their to save our butts when we lose our jobs? Pretty much every big corporation needs to be held accountable for how they spend there money. Individuals do not get away with mismanaging their money and neither should these corps.
Not to get on my soapbox but that is the jist of the issue with the AIG bonuses.

Obama wants to make the vets pay for treatment

Obama wants to make the vets pay for treatment

I could not believe my eyes when I read this one.  Many of my liberal friends speak to me about sacrifice and compassion.  I feel that if this is not an issue that raises both points in a light that we can both agree on there may not be any more common ground.  President Obama’s new plan to save money comes at an unacceptable price.  In order to save $540 million the president wants to require that a veteran’s private health insurance carrier bear the burden of the costs to treat the wounds that solider acquired during his/her service to this nation.

The leader of the nation’s largest veterans organization says he is “deeply disappointed and concerned” after a meeting with President Obama today to discuss a proposal to force private insurance companies to pay for the treatment of military veterans who have suffered service-connected disabilities and injuries.  (Yahoo News)
